Start of Mass Crimes: 23rd Anniversary of the Užice Corps' Entry into Višegrad

On Wednesday, it will be the 23rd anniversary of the Užice Corps' entry into Višegrad. It marked the beginning of the mass liquidation of Bosniaks, who were arrested, taken to camps, and then killed in the most brutal manner.

The image of Serbian forces closing and then burning alive more than 60 Bosniak women and children in a house on Pionirska Street shocked the entire world.

The Association "Women - Victims of War" reminded that on April 15, 1992, the Užice Corps, under the command of Colonel Dragoljub Ojdanić, and in full combat readiness, entered Višegrad. They were accompanied by the commander of the Uzamnica barracks, Captain Borko Glavinić, the president of the SDS in Višegrad, Branislav Savović, the wartime chief of the Public Security Station, Risto Perišić, the police commander, Dragan Tomić, and many others who would commit crimes against Bosniaks in the following weeks.

- On May 19, 1992, Serbian forces removed their JNA uniforms and put on Chetnik uniforms, uniforms of the "Eagles," "Arkan's men," "Seselj's men." They divided themselves into genocidal brigades such as "White Eagles," "Avengers," "Dark Alley"... Then the slaughter began, mass rape, burning civilians alive, impaling on crosses and stakes, and beheading Bosniaks and one Croat. Their bodies were thrown into the Drina River. The river was red for days - the Association recalled, adding that those most responsible for the crimes committed in Višegrad are still at large.

Before the crimes in 1992, 13,471 Bosniaks, 6,743 Serbs, 32 Croats, 319 Yugoslavs, and 634 others lived in Višegrad.
The Association states that every April 15th should be a day to remember those who are no longer in Višegrad. Families are still searching for the remains of about 1,000 murdered civilians.
