(Patria) - Today we remember the thousands of men and boys who were killed in the Srebrenica genocide solely because of their nationality and faith. By remembering them, we pay tribute to the lost lives that cannot be replaced, and to the dignity and courage of their families who lost their loved ones. Their pain and suffering remain real and tangible, said Council of Europe Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić on the occasion of the 28th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide.
She emphasized that when hatred leads to crimes of this kind, it is difficult to find words to describe how deep the downfall of humanity is, or how deep the suffering it causes is.
- For this reason, we should keep such events at the center of our consciousness. Knowing what human beings are still capable of doing to each other reminds us of the profound responsibility to prevent the prejudice, discrimination, and violence that have marked the history of our continent – said the Secretary General of the Council of Europe.
She states that at a time when extreme nationalism is trying to re-establish itself in parts of Europe, "let us remember the importance of dignity, decency, and fundamental rights. Let us remember Srebrenica and learn from it".
