Pope on Stepinac: What would be the point of declaring a saint if the truth is not clear?

(Patria) - On his return from a three-day visit to Bulgaria and North Macedonia, Pope Francis spoke with journalists on the plane. HRT correspondent Silvio Tomašević was interested in the Pope's opinion on the canonization of Alojzije Stepinac.

Tomašević says that from the Pope's answer, "it is quite clear that we will be waiting a long time for the canonization of Cardinal Stepinac."

"Stepinac was a virtuous man, which is why the Church declared him blessed. But at a certain point in the canonization process, there are unclear points, historical points. I prayed, I reflected on it, I sought advice, and I saw that I needed to ask for Irinej's help. He is a great patriarch. Irinej helped, we formed a joint historical commission and cooperated. Both Irinej and I have only one interest: the truth. And that we do not make a mistake. What would be the point of declaring a saint if the truth is not clear? It would serve no one," said Pope Francis.
