Open Championship of the Sarajevo Chess Club: Fifth Memorial 'Ekrem Galijatović'

(Patria) - The Sarajevo Chess Club is the oldest chess club in Bosnia and Herzegovina, founded back in 1904, from whose ranks some of the greatest chess players of our country have emerged, such as Grandmaster Predrag Nikolić and Grandmaster Vesna Mišanović. The Sarajevo Chess Club is organizing the Club championship under the name "Open Championship of the Sarajevo Chess Club 5th Memorial 'Ekrem Galijatović'" in memory of the long-time member of the Presidency of the Sarajevo Chess Club and a prominent Sarajevo lawyer who was considered the best in the field of commercial law.

"The championship begins on March 12 and will last until March 19. The championship will feature the 10 best chess players of Sarajevo, including five players who earned the right to participate in the qualification tournament held from February 13-17, 2019. The opening of the tournament is scheduled for Tuesday, March 12, 2019 at 3:30 PM at the Club premises at Zagrebačka 4a. The championship will be played according to the Berger system in 9 rounds with a time control of 90 minutes per player, with an addition of 30 seconds for each move played. The championship will be registered with the world chess organization FIDE for rating calculation and progress on the world ranking list. All games at the championship will be broadcast live online via the most prestigious chess portal for broadcasting chess games in the world, chess24.com", it was announced.

The championship will feature, among others, celebrated representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina and winner of the silver Olympic medal Grandmaster Emir Dizdarević, then one of the best international masters of our country Damir Šutković, the most promising young chess player and Olympic representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina FIDE Master Rijad Burović, as well as master candidate academician Prof. Dr. Suad Kurtćehajić.

"The tournament director is Assistant Professor Dr. Haris Gekić, master candidate, and the tournament referees are Mirza Miralem, international referee, and Zlatko Miladinović, national referee. Quite certainly, this will be the strongest and most media-popular chess championship of any club in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2019. The main sponsors of the championship are the Bar Association of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Regional Bar Association Sarajevo, and the Galijatović family.
