More than 700 families from the Busovača villages of Merdani, Solakovići, and Dusina are appealing that they are endangered due to a shooting range built by the Croatian hunting society „Zec“ on the border of the villages, reports the BH News Agency Patria.
Hunters shoot clay pigeons just a few hundred meters as the crow flies from the village. Ammunition casings pollute the nearby water source, and bullets fall on local roads, which hundreds of people use daily to go to work or school. Residents are appealing that it is only a matter of time before someone pays with their life.
The struggle of the local population with hunters has been going on for more than a year, and the shooting range has not been removed even after a petition submitted to several federal institutions. The Federal Environmental Inspectorate is also silent.
Hunters refuse to remove the shooting range even after the decision of the Cantonal Enterprise "Šume Srednje Bosne", which declared the shooting range illegal.
- The president of the Croatian hunting society „Zec“ is Jako Čavara. He is the president of the hunting association and also the director of the company „Šumarija“ from Busovača. The decision to grant the „Zec“ Association a permit for the construction of the hunting ground, a decision he practically made himself, was annulled by the Cantonal Forestry, but he does not want to respect it – says one of the residents of Busovača for the BH News Agency Patria, adding that after Marinko Čavara from Busovača was elected President of the Federation, nobody can do anything to the hunters, who are mostly HDZ members.
- HDZ calls the shots in Busovača. When Čavara was elected President of FBiH, they gained additional momentum. They do what they want. Nobody can do anything to them – adds this interlocutor.

While residents fight for their own safety, hunters from the „Zec“ association are working diligently to prepare for a clay pigeon shooting competition, which will be held soon. The release of Dario Kordić, a Croatian politician convicted of war crimes in BiH by the International Court of Justice in The Hague, who is originally from Busovača, will also be celebrated there.
The local population warns that their lives will be further endangered during the summer months, when residents pick forest fruits in the surrounding forests, which represent a solid source of income for them, and for some, the only source of finances throughout the year, writes Patria.
