Orban: Speed up fence construction

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated that the construction of the fence on the Hungarian-Serbian border must be accelerated, reported the MTI news agency, according to the Patria news agency.

Orban yesterday visited the works on the border with Serbia accompanied by the head of the Prime Minister's Office, János Lázár, to get an insight into the fence construction, writes the Hungarian newspaper Magyar Idők. After inspecting the works, the Prime Minister concluded that "the fence works should be accelerated".

"Everyone should be prepared for intensive work in the coming weeks," Orban told the Hungarian daily, as reported by the Hungarian MTI agency.

The Hungarian government decided to build a 175-kilometer-long fence along the border with Serbia.

Lazar previously stated that two types of fences are planned. In areas where crossing the border is easy, the fence will be up to three meters high and one and a half meters deep. In areas where access to the border is difficult due to the natural environment, a simpler fence is planned, 30 to 40 kilometers long.

A wire fence, in accordance with NATO standards, is located 2.5 meters from the border with Serbia, Lazar said.
