Huge sinkhole opened in California

A huge sinkhole opened in California after heavy rains hit the US state, and the ground swallowed the famous Highway-1, which runs along the Pacific, taking a part of it into the ocean.

A landslide on the hill above the road moved tons of mud and trees, and then the ground swallowed a part of the road, the most famous in California, which runs along the entire Pacific coast of that state, according to footage released by the California Department of Transportation.

According to the San Francisco Bay Chronicle, the incident occurred near the town of Rat Creek, on the border of San Luis Obispo County.

Kaltrans stated that their employees are inspecting other parts of the road to determine if similar dangers exist elsewhere.

Kaltrans could not say when the road would be repaired.

California was hit by a so-called "atmospheric river", an air current that brought a large amount of moisture and precipitation from the Pacific.
