The Tokyo Olympic Games have been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, it was officially announced today.
The 32nd Olympic Games were scheduled to take place from July 24 to August 9, but due to the coronavirus that the entire world is fighting, they have been postponed, with the new final date for holding them being the summer of 2021.
The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee decided at today's emergency meeting that it is impossible to hold the Olympic Games in Tokyo this year.
This decision was entirely expected given that athletes cannot prepare for competition in the usual way, and the names of many participants are also unknown because qualification tournaments in various sports have been canceled due to the coronavirus.
Additionally, the Olympic Committees of Canada and Australia had already announced earlier that they would not send their athletes to the Games if they were held this summer.
In addition to the Olympic Games, the 16th Paralympic Games, which were scheduled to be held in Tokyo from August 25 to September 6, have also been postponed.
This is the first time in history that the Olympic Games have been canceled during peacetime. So far, the Games have been canceled three times - in 1916 due to World War I, and in 1940 and 1944 due to World War II.
