From next year, a new model of fighting corruption in BiH that will not depend on political will

The level of corruption in Bosnia and Herzegovina today is the same as several years ago, but the difference is that citizens in the country have become more aware of this problem and it is increasingly being discussed in public, said Eldin Karić, journalist and director of the Anti-Corruption Network ACCOUNT, on the occasion of marking December 9, the International Anti-Corruption Day, which was also marked in BiH.

For Karić, corruption is the biggest problem shaking BiH society today. If corruption were not as widespread here as it is, citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina would live much easier than they do today, Karić believes.

- The cause and consequence of all problems in BiH is corruption. From existential to extremely morbid problems, corruption always lurks in the background – Karić told the BiH news agency Patria.

- This society must begin to strive for everything done in society to be transparent. There must be accountability. Just as a driver is responsible for his car when in traffic, so must someone at the head of an institution be responsible for its work.

Karić is disappointed that no politicians were present at the conference marking the International Anti-Corruption Day in Sarajevo today, even though they are the most responsible for combating this scourge. The conference was organized by the Agency for Prevention of Corruption and Coordination of the Fight against Corruption of BiH (APIK), and it is the first conference of this kind organized by APIK, which is a good sign.

Karić announced that, due to the inertia of politicians in BiH, from next year he is forced to launch a project to combat corruption in BiH that will not depend on political will in the country.

He explained that ACCOUNT members will try to create such an atmosphere in the country that all those holding political positions in the state will have to be aware that there is someone watching them and someone who will report and publish all their irregularities. A great responsibility, when it comes to corruption in BiH, lies with the citizens themselves and the media, Karić said, NAP writes.
