(Patria) - The road that leads into the ocean is a spectacular sight you can see if you find yourself in Florida. The Overseas Highway is 180 kilometers long and connects the Florida Keys islands.
An engineering marvel built in the thirties of the 20th century on the route of a railway line destroyed by a devastating hurricane.
A black and white buoy in Key West marks the end of the journey - the southernmost point of continental USA, which is closer to Cuba than to Miami.
The journey from Miami to Key West in Florida was not always as carefree as it is today.
Before the road was built, the only way to travel that distance was a day-long boat trip, and the sailing schedule depended on the weather and the tide.
The famous Overseas Highway crosses over 44 islands and 42 bridges, and it takes less than four hours to cross on average - if you resist the urge to stop at one of the stops along the way.
There you will find perfect diving spots, as well as a museum where you can learn more about the former railway, once called a world wonder, writes Punkufer.hr.
The landscapes you can enjoy during the drive are hard to describe in words. The sky melting into the turquoise sea, limestone islands, boats bobbing on the waves, and dolphins performing their dance make for a spectacular sight.
