Anniversary of the Battle for Debelo Brdo Marked: Remembering Brave Defenders and a Message about New Heroes

(Patria) - The anniversary of one of the decisive battles for the defense of the Soukbunar and Širokača settlements during the aggression against Bosnia and Herzegovina was marked today at the Debelo Brdo site.

Numerous citizens, former comrades-in-arms, families of fallen fighters, and representatives of veterans' organizations gathered to pay tribute to the heroes who defended the freedom and dignity of their people.

The ceremony was attended by the Minister for Veterans' Affairs of Sarajevo Canton, Omer Osmanović, who addressed the attendees with a fitting speech.

He particularly emphasized the importance of preserving the culture of remembrance and passing on the truth about the defense of the homeland to younger generations.



- The Battle for Debelo Brdo is a symbol of courage, unity, and determination. The freedom we enjoy today was fought for here, on these slopes, with immense sacrifices from our fighters. It is up to us to preserve this memory and translate their struggle into lasting societal values.

Today, when we see young people contributing to the community and doing good deeds, we see that there are also some new heroes in the settlement – those who build, help, and create a better future – Osmanović stated.

On behalf of veterans' associations, it was emphasized that the Battle for Debelo Brdo remains a lasting reminder of the strength of unity and the courage of ordinary people in extremely difficult circumstances.

Today's commemoration concluded with a gathering of participants, comrades-in-arms, and citizens, with a shared message that the values of patriotism, freedom, and unity must be passed on to new generations – because it is precisely in this that the legacy of the heroes of Debelo Brdo lives on.
