34th anniversary of crime against residents of Aerodromsko Naselje marked; no one has been held accountable for the murder of 127 civilians to this day

(Patria) - On June 17, 1992, the residents of Aerodromsko Naselje experienced an unprecedented crime. In the early morning hours, special forces from Niš entered the settlement and began a massacre of innocent civilians.

On this day 34 years ago, 127 civilians were brutally murdered in horrific crimes, while around 500 were taken to the Kula, Lukavica, Ilidža camps and the Nedžarići barracks, where they endured various humiliations and tortures. Survivors of the camps, family members, and representatives of veterans' associations gathered today at the memorial to pay tribute to the innocent victims of this settlement. The Minister for Veterans' Affairs of Sarajevo Canton, Omer Osmanović, also laid a wreath and paid his respects.

"Today, with deep respect, we remember the murdered residents of Aerodromsko Naselje and all those who endured unimaginable suffering. This anniversary also holds a special personal dimension for me. Members of my family were caught by the beginning of the aggression in occupied Grbavica, and through their stories I grew up aware of how a single moment can change a person's life and that of an entire family. The fear for loved ones, the uncertainty of whether they will return home, and the consequences such experiences leave do not pass with the end of the war. They remain deeply etched in the memories of the families and communities that lived through them. That is why today we pay tribute not only to those who went through the camps, but also to their families who shared their suffering. It is our duty to nurture a culture of remembrance, to speak the truth about what happened, and to build a society in which genocide will never be repeated to anyone," said Minister Osmanović.

To this day, no one has been adequately prosecuted or punished for this horrific crime before the competent courts. A memorial plaque with the names of the murdered neighbors was erected in the settlement as a permanent testimony and warning of the bestial crimes committed thirty-four years ago.
