(Patria) - World Health Organization (WHO) Director for Emergencies Michael Ryan stated that wearing face masks, if used improperly, can cause more harm than good in the fight against the spread of the new coronavirus.
At a time when some countries are facing a shortage of masks, Ryan reiterated that the WHO believes they should only be worn by sick people, so as not to spread the virus, and by healthcare workers who need them.
"There is no concrete evidence to suggest that mass mask-wearing provides any benefit; in fact, there is some evidence suggesting the opposite," said Ryan.
He was likely alluding to the possibility that a person might bring the virus close to their face when putting on or taking off a mask.
Ryan also said he had not heard of Austria's decision to order citizens to wear masks when going to stores.
