(Patria) - With tonight's sunset, the 17th night of Ramadan will begin, a night that commemorates the victory of the Prophet (pbuh) and his companions in the Battle of Badr in Islamic tradition. Namely, in the second year after the Hijra of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) from Mecca to Medina, or in 624 AD, on the slopes of Badr, the first major battle in the history of Islam took place.
The idolaters from Mecca, although three times more numerous, were defeated by the Prophet (pbuh) and his companions, and this is one of the greatest victories of Muslims in history. Although numerically weaker, the Muslims, led by Muhammad (pbuh), militarily defeated the enemies. At that time, 14 Muslims were killed, and 70 polytheists.
This victory confirmed the community of believers from Medina as an important and strong factor that all inhabitants of the Arabian Peninsula had to reckon with. Allah (SWT) also speaks of this victory in the Quran: "How often has a small company overcome a large company by permission of Allah. And Allah is with the patient." (Al-Baqarah, 249)
It is also worth noting that the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina has declared the 17th of Ramadan, the day the Battle of Badr took place, as the Day of Returnee Congregations.
