(Patria) - The Bosnia and Herzegovina national team was defeated with an overall score of 3:0 by Germany, the fifth-ranked team in the world, in the Davis Cup World Group I.
After the defeat of Nerman Fatić against Daniel Altmaier (7:6; 6:2), Damir Džumhur in the duel with Yannick Hanfmann (6:2; 6:1), and the German doubles pair Kevin Krawietz/Tim Puetz defeated Mirza Bašić and Damir Džumhur in two sets (6:4; 6:2):
In the first three games of the match Bašić/Džumhur vs. Krawietz/Puetz, we did not see any break point opportunities, and then the Bosnian tennis players missed two in the fourth. The German combination in the following fifth game reached the first break points of the first set, and immediately Krawietz/Puetz secured the break and confirmed the break of serve in the next game (4:2).
Bašić and Džumhur struggled on their serve, saving four break points and reducing the Germans' lead to 4:3. Soon the guests from Germany took a 5:3 lead, and then even missed set points, which the tennis players of Bosnia and Herzegovina saved (5:4).
Nevertheless, in the very next game, the German tennis players took the lead in sets, after calmly serving out for 6:4.
The Germans demonstrated dominance in the continuation as well. They immediately broke at the start of the second set, and then routinely served for a 2:0 lead in games.
Mirza and Damir had an opportunity to get back into this match with Krawietz and Puetz leading 3:2, as they had a 30:0 lead on their serve, but the German players once again kept a cool head and demonstrated why they are the fifth-ranked team in the world, stringing together four points to win the game, then breaking serve and being secure once more on their own serve for 6:2.
After this defeat, Bosnia and Herzegovina will fight through a play-off for survival in World Group I, with the draw scheduled for September 20, and the matches set to take place in February next year.
