Not even the dead are left in peace: Grave desecrated again in Budak

(Patria) - The grave in the settlement of Budak, located right next to the church – symbolically and cynically built as a "prayer space" next to the site where crimes were committed – has been devastated again. The fence was destroyed, the protective belt demolished, and the very place where the skeletal remains of genocide victims were exhumed has been disturbed again.

The bones of the son of Munira Subašić, president of the Association "Movement of Mothers of the Enclaves of Srebrenica and Žepa", were also found at this location. Twenty years after the war, and more than thirty years after the genocide – not even the dead can have dignified peace.

The Law on Missing Persons of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Articles 20 and 25) clearly stipulates the protection of mass grave sites and provides for sanctions for their desecration. However, the institutions are silent again.

"We call on the authorities to react urgently. To investigate, to prosecute, to ensure the permanent protection of this place – not only for the sake of justice, but also for humanity.

We also ask the Prime Minister of the RS entity to speak out – to publicly disclose all information concerning mass graves and the crimes that have left wounds that even decades cannot heal, it was announced by the Association Movement of Mothers of the Enclaves of Srebrenica and Žepa and the Association of Victims and Witnesses of Genocide, we ask you to publish this.

The dignity of the dead is a mirror of the conscience of the living. Silence and ignoring such heinous acts makes accomplices of those who should uphold the law.
