(Patria) - The father of the most successful tennis player in BiH, Damir Džumhur, spoke today with Minister Gudeljević about topics related to Damir Džumhur's status in BiH, the treatment of state institutions regarding his declaration as a top athlete, state support for participation in tournaments, and other important topics related to this athlete's work. Unfortunately, in 2017, Džumhur's application for top athlete status was rejected because the "application was disorderly".
Considering this fact, Minister Gudeljević wanted to initiate a conversation on this topic, believing that a formal oversight should not stand in the way of an athlete who plays matches thirty weeks a year, thus presenting Bosnia and Herzegovina as its best promoter throughout the year. The mere fact that top athletes have to apply for a competition instead of their selection being automatically processed based on previous achievements is unacceptable.
At the same time, it should be emphasized that Džumhur was the first athlete to bring gold to Bosnia and Herzegovina from the Singapore Olympics in 2010, and during that period, he was the third-ranked junior tennis player in the world.
Minister Gudeljević emphasized that she will undertake everything within the Ministry's jurisdiction to rectify the injustice towards Džumhur and to return his selection as a top athlete of BiH to the procedure.
She stressed that sport is very important for a country, that athletes are its best promoters, and athletes who win medals must be a priority and have a deserved place in society. When asked what it feels like to be the father and coach of a world-renowned tennis player, Džumhur's father simply said: "I get goosebumps".
