The UN General Assembly proclaimed December 11 as the International Mountain Day, and it has been officially celebrated as such since 2003, writes the BH news agency Patria.
Given that BiH is known for its mountains, and especially Bjelašnica, Jahorina, and Trebević gained significance after the 14th Winter Olympic Games held in Sarajevo in 1984.
Otherwise, the highest peak in Bosnia and Herzegovina is Mount Maglić (2,386 m). On Maglić, there is also Perućica, the largest primeval forest in Europe, and a large cirque Urdeni dolovi with Trnovačko Lake at 1517 m. The foot of the mountain and all its slopes are rich in water, with numerous springs, the most abundant of which is Carev Do, which never runs dry.
We should not forget Treskavica, Igman, Prenj, Vranica, Vlašić, Čvrsnica, Velež, Rakitnica, whose heights exceed 1,500 meters above sea level.
Unfortunately, the natural resources that BiH abounds with are not sufficiently utilized or explored, and this is also the case with its mountains. Apart from mountaineering clubs and nature lovers, a large part of BiH citizens are not even aware of what surrounds us. Therefore, if you have the opportunity this coming weekend, take advantage of it to go to the nearest mountain and spend the day in the fresh air, enjoying nature.
