Near Stolac lies a 2,000-year-old Greek well that has never run dry

(Patria) - Wandering photographer Boris Trogrančić, who captures unrealistically beautiful locations across BiH and the entire region with his lens, this time reported for Punkufer from sunny Herzegovina.

Trogrančić's journey took him near Stolac, to the village of Boljune - a treasury of medieval tombstones and home to an ancient Greek well, said to be 2,000 years old.



- I arrived in the village on a hot afternoon and found people working in the fields, who showed me the way to the necropolis of tombstones. The location is nicely arranged, and the tombstones are fenced and clearly visible - says Trogrančić.

You will find the Boljuni necropolis of tombstones in the village of Bjelojevići, 15 kilometers from Stolac, towards Hutovo blato.

- The necropolis dates back to the second half of the 14th century, and most of the tombstones are from the 15th century. The tomb of the famous commander Vlatko Vuković Kosača, lord of Hum and commander of the Bosnian king Tvrtko I, is located there - says Trogrančić.



He adds that the historical area of the Boljuni I and II necropolis of tombstones has been declared a national monument of BiH.

- Near the necropolis is the famous Greek well, popularly called Neveš voda. In the Stolac region, such wells on round foundations, which were in use until the sixties of the last century, can generally be found.

The well was mostly filled by autumn rains; rainwater flowed between the tombstones and was channeled to the well. It was used for watering livestock and washing. People even learned to swim here.

They say the well dates back to the Illyrian period. It is a dry area where, since it was settled, there has been a need for water, so it is realistic to expect its age to reach far into the past.



An interesting fact is associated with Neveš voda - they say this well has never run dry, so it might be connected to Hutovo blato by some channel - added Trogrančić.
