The robbery of the Hatton Garden jewellery shop and vault in London, from which jewellery and cash worth over 200 million pounds were stolen over the past weekend, could be the biggest heist in the history of Great Britain, reports the Patria news agency.
Investigators are trying to figure out exactly what happened during the Easter holidays in the elite London district known for its jewellery shops.
According to the current reconstruction, the thieves first climbed onto the roof, then entered the building through it and descended into the basement where the vault with 600 safety deposit boxes is located. They cut through the grilles and disabled the alarm on the main door leading into the vault.
It is speculated that they broke in as early as last Thursday, meaning they spent four days in Hatton Garden! The robbery was, in fact, only discovered on Tuesday at 8:10 AM, and there were no signs of a break-in on the outside of the building.
The thieves managed to open and loot 300 safety deposit boxes. The users of the Hatton Garden vault are mostly jewellers and gold traders, so the thieves' haul was certainly magnificent. To make it all seem like a movie, the alarm went off around 1 AM on Friday, and a guard came to check what was happening, but at first glance nothing seemed suspicious to him, and he said 'he wasn't paid enough to go inside,' writes the Daily Mail.
The exact value of the stolen goods may never be determined because victims in such cases do not want to disclose what they had in their safety deposit boxes. The thieves were resourceful enough, and obviously had enough time, and they also stole all the surveillance camera footage from the premises.
