The hardest day in the city's history: 3,777 shells fired at Sarajevo on July 22, 1993

On this day in 1993, a record 3,777 shells were fired at the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina in a single day, writes the Patria News Agency.

They caused enormous damage, civilians, women, and children were killed, cultural and religious buildings were shelled, even hospitals. During the siege of Sarajevo, an average of 329 shells fell on the city daily.

The siege of Sarajevo, which lasted 1,425 days, is considered one of the longest in the history of modern warfare. During the siege, 11,541 citizens were killed, including 1,601 children. 

The siege of Sarajevo lasted four years. 120 mortars and 250 JNA tanks were stationed on the hills around Sarajevo, which later fell into the hands of the Army of Republika Srpska.
