Strongest candidate for prime minister position says 'Brexit in October with or without a deal'

(Patria) – Immediately after Prime Minister May's resignation announcement on Friday, the general debate about her successor intensified.

Of the twenty or so potential candidates, Boris Johnson, who led the campaign for Brexit, has emerged as the favourite among members of the Eurosceptic Conservative Party.

This former Mayor of London and Foreign Secretary believes that Great Britain must leave the EU by the end of October – with or without a withdrawal agreement. He reiterated his stance a few hours after Theresa May's emotional farewell speech.

Who Boris Johnson's rivals will be will be known during the next week, but names that have been circulating for some time, some of whom have already expressed their aspirations, are Jeremy Hunt, Dominic Raab, Sajid Javid, and others.

Johnson has hinted that he would certainly try to reach a more favourable agreement with Brussels before heading down the path of a no-deal Brexit. He believes that a new leader will approach the issues differently and have the fresh impetus of a new administration.

The option of leaving the EU without a deal will certainly face strong resistance in parliament due to the uncertainty and damage it could inflict on Great Britain, which could ultimately be used as an argument against Johnson's policy.

The race for the new prime minister officially begins on June 10, three days after Theresa May leaves office at Downing Street 10. Members of Parliament will vote several times to narrow down the choice from 20 candidates likely to participate in the race – to two by the end of the month.

After the Members of Parliament narrow down the list, the Conservative Party will choose its new leader, who will automatically become prime minister.

All candidates for the position of Conservative Party leader and prime minister believe that they alone can carry out the complex task of Brexit, where the biggest challenge is the 'impenetrable filter' of a divided parliament, which has so far not allowed any proposal on Britain's exit from the EU to pass, writes Patria.
