(Patria) - The flag and coat of arms of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina were officially adopted on May 4, 1992, at one of the most important moments in modern Bosnian history.

The first flag of the independent Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina was inspired by the symbols of medieval Bosnia and the Kotromanić dynasty. It had a white background of rectangular shape, with the coat of arms of the Republic of BiH in its center. The coat of arms consisted of a blue shield divided by a silver diagonal band, with three gold lilies arranged in each field – a total of six lilies, a symbol that has been associated with Bosnian statehood throughout history.

The flag was first presented internationally on May 22, 1992, in front of the United Nations headquarters in New York, when Bosnia and Herzegovina was admitted to this organization.

During the aggression against our homeland, it became one of the most recognizable symbols of resistance and the struggle for the survival of the state, and many still remember it today as the flag under which the sovereignty of Bosnia and Herzegovina was defended.

After gaining independence from the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, this flag was the official state symbol of the internationally recognized Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its use was also confirmed by the Constitution of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and it remained in official use until 1998. The current flag of Bosnia and Herzegovina was introduced on February 4, 1998, after domestic political representatives failed to reach an agreement on a new solution. The then High Representative Carlos Westendorp made a decision imposing the current design of the BiH flag.

Along with the coat of arms with lilies and the white cloth flag, the official symbols of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina also included the anthem Jedna si jedina, which, along with other symbols, remained deeply inscribed in the collective memory of the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
