Museum of Sarajevo completes most demanding works on Svrzo House: 300 years of history welcome summer in new guise

(Patria) - The Museum of Sarajevo has successfully completed the second, and at the same time the most extensive, phase of revitalization and reconstruction works on buildings B and C within Svrzo House. During the winter months, demanding interventions were carried out on the buildings known as the Older Women's House (Building B) and the Men's House (Building C), thereby ensuring the static and structural stability of the complex.

With the renovation of the roof, Svrzo House is now fully protected, and all works were carried out in accordance with the strictest criteria for the protection of cultural and historical assets and national monuments.

We remind you that in the previous phase, Building A was renovated, including courtyard walls and eaves, along with complete painting, restoration, and preparation of the permanent exhibition.

In the next period, the completion of minor interventions on Building D – the Bachelor's House, as well as the renovation of external walls (Building F) are planned. The completion of these works is planned by the beginning of the summer season, i.e., by June 1st.

The summer of 2026 will be marked by two significant anniversaries: the 300th anniversary of Svrzo House and the 75th anniversary since the Museum of Sarajevo purchased the house and began its systematic renovation and restoration.

On this occasion, a special exhibition of archival documents, photographs, and testimonies about the decades-long care for this most valuable residential complex of the Ottoman period in Sarajevo will be organized.

Svrzo House, three centuries old, remains the pride of Sarajevo and a permanent reminder of the city's rich cultural and family history. This monument of culture is carefully preserved by the Museum of Sarajevo and the Ministry of Culture and Sports of Sarajevo Canton.

The Minister of Culture and Sports of Sarajevo Canton, Kenan Magoda, emphasized that Svrzo House is not just a historical building, but a living witness to three centuries of life, family stories, the silence of Sarajevo courtyards, and the deeply ingrained identity of this city.

“When I took over the responsibility of leading the Ministry of Culture and Sports of Sarajevo Canton, I found a cultural heritage that had been neglected and left to decay for years. The most painful symbol of this neglect was Svrzo House – closed, vulnerable, and in a silence that does not befit one of Sarajevo's most valuable jewels.

Today, I can proudly say that our heritage is our priority, not just in words, but in deeds. Together with the Museum of Sarajevo and its director Indira Kučuk-Sorguč, we prove every day what love, dedication, and responsibility towards what we have inherited and what we are obliged to preserve mean,” stated Minister Magoda.
