Muhasilović: Trump's Right-Wing Populism Fuels the Far-Right in Europe

(Patria) - During the annual session of the UN General Assembly, more and more countries are recognizing Palestine, hinting at a two-state solution to the crisis.

However, Israel and their main ally, the United States, continue to strongly oppose this.

Professor of Geopolitics and International Relations Jahja Muhasilović spoke about the possible outcomes of these political developments in the evening edition of the program '7Plus' on Hayat Television.

First, he commented on the speech of US President Donald Trump, which lasted over an hour instead of the planned 15 minutes.

- I think the only thing missing from his speech was that he himself stopped the meteor that was heading to destroy planet Earth. Of course, President Trump sees his country and his rule only in superlatives.

However, things are not quite like that. Although the US is undoubtedly the strongest economic, political, and military power, they are not in a great situation at all - says Muhasilović.

First of all, he adds, they are losing significantly in their economic rivalry with China, even though they are trying to maintain their position. And the only thing keeping them on the throne is the ability to continue printing dollars.

- If the US were stripped of that power, and if their strength were viewed through the real economy, it would show that it is not as Trump claims. On the other hand, America is rapidly changing internally, and there is enormous polarization in American society.

This entire narrative that the US President uses at such an international meeting is more directed at the domestic public. This is evident in the story about illegal migrants, and in one part of his speech, he mentioned how Europeans are losing their identity due to illegal migration.

This is actually mythology and a narrative spread by far-right political circles in the West. One could even say that Trump is part of that establishment as a populist riding that wave - says Muhasilović.

However, he notes, the far-right spectrum of political action has been developing in the West for a long time and is almost mainstream. Many countries today have such governments - from America to Italy to the Netherlands.

In ideological terms, they increasingly resemble Putin's Russia because these are the principles and narratives that Russia has advocated for years. This is the key reason why Trump has no ideological problems communicating with Putin.

Therefore, one can expect Trump's right-wing populism to be a rising force in Europe as well. I think the turning point for this could be the upcoming elections in France and Germany, where these far-right forces are growing significantly from election to election - notes Muhasilović.

Reminding that Germany and France are the two political engines of the EU, Muhasilović emphasizes the fact of the clear, but also significant growth of Marine Le Pen's party in France, as well as the far-right in Germany.

- So, it is a very qualitative growth because they are growing steadily from cycle to cycle. This picture of a changing Europe will continue as long as the economic crisis lasts, as long as inflation continues, and as long as migration continues.

These immigrations, combined with the economic crisis, create anxiety among the local population, and then they turn to these political options.

Unfortunately, the future that is emerging for Europe is not good because it is destroying a multilateral order that all of Europe has been building for a long time after World War II - believes Muhasilović.
