Mostar on the verge of communal collapse: Union warns of critical conditions and waste collection crisis

(Patria) - The Union of Workers of the Communal Economy of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton has warned of a serious deterioration of the situation in Mostar regarding waste collection and disposal, stating that a collapse of the communal system is imminent.

They emphasize that communal workers are facing extremely difficult working conditions, large quantities of waste, health risks, and additional physical strain due to accumulated garbage. The problem is further slowed down by long waits for special vehicles to unload at the landfill, while workers at the landfill itself work in difficult conditions and often without adequate equipment.

The Union states that workers are not responsible for the current situation, but bear the greatest consequences, warning that due to exhaustion and dissatisfaction, an increasing number of them are considering leaving their jobs.

They called on the City of Mostar to urgently take concrete measures to stabilize the work of communal companies and prevent further escalation of the problem.

We recall, waste collection in Mostar has been difficult for weeks, and the entire situation has also taken on a political dimension. Mayor Mario Kordić accused councilors of the Coalition for Mostar (SDA, BPS, and BH Zeleni) of deliberately slowing down waste acceptance through the management of the public company Deponija Mostar, using the communal crisis for political purposes.
