Mogherini: Freedom of the press under increasing pressure

(Patria) - On the occasion of May 3rd, World Press Freedom Day, EU High Representative Federica Mogherini said that this day celebrates the key role of free media not only as a source of reliable and accurate news, but as a pillar of democracy.

"The quality of democratic processes is linked to the state of freedom of expression, as well as to media freedom and pluralism. There is no democracy without truly free media. Despite their significant responsibility as guarantors of verified and accurate news for the public, free, diverse and independent media are at the very foundation of a pluralistic and open society. Investigative journalism fulfills a necessary watchdog role, helping the public ensure the accountability of authorities and institutions at all levels for their actions and obligations. However, we increasingly witness attempts to narrow the space for free media, including through the systematic undermining of their credibility, while too many journalists have lost their lives or their lives are threatened due to exposing uncomfortable truths," said Mogherini.

This year's 26th anniversary highlights the existing challenges around the world that media face in elections, in times of disinformation, as well as the potential of media to support democracy, peace, and reconciliation. Disinformation has a significant potential to negatively affect democratic processes and public discourse worldwide, including in the European Union.

"That is why we launched the 'EU Action Plan against Disinformation', which intensifies the European response to strengthen the resilience of our societies to disinformation. The plan focuses on better detection of disinformation, coordination and joint action of the Union and Member States, mobilizing the private sector to fulfill its obligations, raising public awareness, and empowering citizens. A healthy democracy relies on open, free, and fair public discourse, and it is our duty to protect that space and not allow anyone to spread disinformation that incites hatred, division, and distrust in democracy.

The EU promotes free and fair media not only at home but also globally in our relations with third countries, including through funding targeted projects that improve quality journalism, media freedom, and access to public information. As freedom of the press is under increasing pressure, the EU reaffirms its determination to defend press and media freedom within its borders and around the world.
