Young physicists from BiH bring three medals from the European Physics Olympiad

(Patria) - Young physicists from Bosnia and Herzegovina participated for the third time in the European Physics Olympiad, held in Latvia from May 31 to June 4. Once again, they return home with medals. The Olympiad is an open type, so non-European countries can also participate, and this year's Olympiad saw a record number of non-European countries, the Society of Physicists in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which organizes the participation of students from BiH in international physics competitions, told Patria.

At international physics competitions, students compete in solving theoretical and experimental tasks. The representatives of BiH at the 3rd European Olympiad were Fahrudin Delić (First Bosniak Gymnasium, Sarajevo, 4th grade), Muhamed Sokolović (Richmond Park College, Sarajevo, 4th grade), Nola Šegalo (Richmond Park College, Sarajevo, 4th grade), Dragan Marković (Gymnasium "Filip Višnjić", Bijeljina, 4th grade), and Alen Mrdović (Second Gymnasium, Sarajevo, 4th grade), while the leaders of the BH team were Senad Isaković and Dženan Devedžić.

Students Fahrudin Delić, Muhamed Sokolović, and Nola Šegalo won bronze medals. This is the first time that students from Bosnia and Herzegovina have won three medals at an international physics competition. So far, representatives of Bosnia and Herzegovina at European Physics Olympiads have won one silver, four bronze medals, and three honorable mentions. After the state physics competition, where the representatives of Bosnia and Herzegovina were selected, three-week preparations followed at the Department of Physics of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in Sarajevo.

"The preparations included theoretical lectures and practical work with experimental equipment. Most of our students do not have the opportunity to conduct experiments during regular physics classes in their schools, so we try to compensate for this lack during the multi-week preparations before the competition," says Benjamin Fetić, president of the Society of Physicists in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

He particularly emphasized that the successes of BiH students at international physics competitions in recent years are largely the result of constant work with students, especially at summer and winter physics camps organized by the Society of Physicists in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and that this summer in August, a physics camp will be organized where future potential Olympians will prepare, among other things, for international competitions.

Upon returning to Bosnia and Herzegovina, the students face a new round of preparations for the upcoming 50th International Physics Olympiad, which will be held in early July in Israel.

"We expect that our students will once again demonstrate a high level of knowledge at the 50th International Physics Olympiad and bring medals from the International Physics Olympiad as well," Fetić added.

The participation of young physicists in the 3rd European Physics Olympiad was financially supported by the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth of Sarajevo Canton and the Pedagogical Institute of the Republic of Srpska.
