(Patria) – EU Foreign Ministers will meet on Monday to discuss the nuclear deal with Iran in light of developments in recent months.
They will seek to convince Iran and the US to de-escalate tensions in order to preserve the 2015 agreement between France, Great Britain, Germany, Russia, China, and Iran, from which the US withdrew last year.
France, Great Britain, and Germany are concerned about the rising tensions between Iran and the US, and the increasing number of incidents in the Persian Gulf, and are determined to become more actively involved in resolving the dispute through diplomacy.
These countries have issued a joint statement calling for peace and cooperation from all relevant parties:
- The risks are such that it is imperative for all actors to stop and consider the possible consequences of their actions. We believe that the time has come to act responsibly and find a way to stop the escalation of tensions and restart dialogue.
The essence of the 2015 agreement is that Iran will reduce its nuclear program in accordance with the conditions specified in the agreement in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.
The Euronews portal writes that official Iran reiterated on Sunday that it is ready to sit down at the negotiating table with the US if US President Trump withdraws the sanctions.
