The spacious cemetery in Dživar near the Dživar mosque in Donje Čićevo, Trebinje, covers an area of over 15,000 square meters, says Husein ef. Hodžić, the chief imam of Trebinje, writes the Patria agency.
The first buried were likely muhajirs from the Montenegrin coast after 1687, from Herceg Novi and other places, and among them possibly some descendants of Muslims previously expelled from Spain, writes the Patria news agency.
- If these old graves and their tombstones could speak to these later, new graves and tombstones, it would surely be an exciting and instructive story.
Today, there are so many young Bosniaks who achieve master's degrees and doctorates, and not one of them is looking into the past of the first Bosnian muhajirs in Trebinje and beyond.
Perhaps the late Osman Zubčević (1259) also wonders about this from his grave, with the admonishing inscription on his tombstone which has long lost its verticality. Hurry, young researchers, before these tombstones are swallowed by the earth, if it has already hosted their deceased!, urges ef. Hodžić.
