After news spread through the media today about the possibility of a Mediterranean hurricane forming, which could reach the southern Adriatic next Thursday, Crometeo reacted by publishing an article about the characteristics of this rare meteorological phenomenon, reports the Patria News Agency.
While warning that conditions for a "medicane" (Mediterranean hurricane) will be known for sure by tomorrow morning at the latest, Crometeo writes that there is a small but real possibility of a medicane appearing in this region.
In the article about this unusual phenomenon, Crometeo reminds that a similar cyclone hit southern Dalmatia at the end of 2008, and that this cyclone resembled a medicane in some aspects. The storm passed over the Dubrovnik area, with rain falling all day accompanied by strong bura winds. The stormy westerly wind raised very large waves, and the strongest wind gusts in the Adriatic were recorded in Montenegro, where as much as 236 km/h was measured in Herceg Novi.
Medicanei, like tropical storms, usually stay over the sea and weaken upon reaching land. However, parallel to rising temperatures due to global warming, such phenomena could become more frequent, writes Index.
