Mesić on Izetbegović: His name is forever inscribed in the history of this country, the region, Europe, and even the world

(Patria) - Stjepan Mesić, former President of the Republic of Croatia, at the formal academy held this evening on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of the first president of the independent Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Alija Izetbegović, said that he was greatly honored and pleased to be in Zenica this evening and to attend the academy on the occasion of marking "a century since the birth of Alija Izetbegović".

- A man whose name is forever inscribed in the history of this country, but also in the history of the region and Europe, and even the world. He was a thinker, a leader, a fighter for the dignity of the people to whom he belonged, but also a statesman who remained true to principles, justice, freedom, dialogue, and coexistence in the most difficult times - said Mesić.

He added that "in a time that knew no mercy, Izetbegović advocated for joy".

- In a time of hatred, he chose faith in humanity - said Mesić, adding that Izetbegović was aware of the depths and complexity of BiH society.

- He knew that the future could only be built on the foundations of common respect and mutual appreciation. My personal acquaintance and cooperation with President Izetbegović taught me a lot. We talked in different circumstances, sometimes we agreed, sometimes we disagreed a little, but it was always a dialogue between people who believed in the power of words, not force. And therein lies his greatness - he knew that politics, if it is not humane and if it does not lead to peace, ceases to be worthy of its name - said Mesić, among other things.
