Merkel: Germany supports the Western Balkans, but criteria must be met

ZAGREB, (Patria) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel stated today during an official visit to Zagreb that Germany's position is to generally support the countries of the Western Balkans and their ambitions to become EU members. On the other hand, Merkel stated that it should be taken into account that the criteria for EU accession must be met.

„We will certainly address this further“, said the German Chancellor in response to a journalist's question about plans for the Western Balkans.

The German Chancellor and former chairwoman of the German Christian Democrats, Angela Merkel, arrived in Zagreb on Saturday afternoon. She held a meeting with Prime Minister Plenković at the Government, and this evening she will participate in a pre-election rally of the HDZ and the European People's Party (EPP) ahead of the European elections.
