Memorial Center: 22nd anniversary of the first collective funeral for genocide victims

(Patria) - The Memorial Center will today mark the Day of Martyrs and the 22nd anniversary of the first collective funeral in Potočari.

After a fitting address, a religious program is planned, which will be led by the Mufti of Tuzla, Vahid ef. Fazlović.

The commemoration of the Day of Martyrs and the 22nd anniversary of the first collective funeral in Potočari will be held at the Musalla of the Memorial Center starting at 12:00 PM.

On March 31, 2003, the first 600 victims of the Srebrenica genocide were buried in the Potočari cemetery. It was the first of three collective funerals in 2003 at the Memorial Center.

The second funeral was held on July 11 for 282 buried victims, and the third on September 20, 2003, when 107 people were buried. A total of 989 genocide victims were buried that year.

The Memorial Center was officially opened in September 2003 by then-US President Bill Clinton.

This year, July 11 marks the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, in which 8,372 people were killed.
