Massacres: Galić Sentenced to Life for Markale 1, While Sladoje Never Charged for Markale 2

In the first massacre at the Markale market, 68 people were killed and 144 wounded on February 5, 1994, writes the Patria News Agency.

The shell was fired from the positions of the Sarajevo-Romanija Corps of the Army of Republika Srpska (VRS). Stanislav Galić, then commander of this corps, was definitively sentenced to life imprisonment by the Hague Tribunal (ICTY).

The Hague Tribunal sentenced former VRS general Dragomir Milošević to 33 years in prison for terrorizing the civilian population of Sarajevo from 1994 to 1995. From August 1994 until the end of the war in November 1995, Dragomir Milošević commanded the Romanija Corps of the VRS, which blockaded the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, the appellate judgment established that he was allegedly undergoing treatment at the time of the Markale massacre, and his sentence was reduced to 29 years in prison.

During his treatment, he was replaced by General Čedomir Sladoje, but he was never charged for the Markale crime.

The trial panel emphasized during Milošević's trial that the attack on the Markale market on August 28, 1995, in which 34 civilians were killed and 78 wounded, was one of the most heinous crimes. It also established that the SRK shelled the Markale market. It rejected the defense's claims that the shelling of the Markale market was carried out by the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina, according to the statement.
