Massacre at Alipašino Polje: Eleven Sarajevans Killed While Waiting in Line for Bread

Families, friends, neighbours, and delegations of the Canton and City of Sarajevo, as well as the Municipality of Novi Grad, laid flowers today and paid tribute by reciting Fatiha and observing a minute of silence for the Sarajevans killed at the site of the massacre near the market at Alipašino Polje.

At that fateful spot, 23 years ago, the following lost their lives: Rifet Bahtić, Jasmin Đozo, Muniba Ganija, Nermin Gušić, Zoran Kafedžić, Sadrija Krasnići, Nadežda Puljić, Daniel Turkulj, Edin Uzunović, and two other citizens who, unfortunately, were never identified, reports the Patria news agency.

-On this day in 1992, around 12:00, a 120-millimetre mortar shell was fired from enemy positions in the direction of Nedžarići, landing among a group of citizens. Eleven of our fellow citizens were killed instantly, while 53 were seriously or lightly wounded, reminded all present the Minister of Economy of Sarajevo Canton, Muharem Šabić.

At the site of her husband's death was Miraleta Bahtić, who, with tears in her eyes, recalled that sad day when her husband Rifet went to get bread and, while waiting in line to buy it for himself and other family members, lost his life.

-There was a bread line about 200 metres long, and suddenly a shell fell. Next to me, 24-year-old Jasmin Đozo was killed, and a shrapnel hit me in the spine and I fell. A little girl helped me get up, but I couldn't stand on my feet. They loaded the dead and wounded into a truck. It was horrific. It's hard for me to speak; the emotions come back, added Hamdija Smajić, who also attended this anniversary this year, supplementing the details from the site of the tragedy, the Government of Sarajevo Canton announced.
