Markale August 28, 1995: The last major crime of Karadžić's Serbs in besieged Sarajevo

On August 28, 1995, a shell was fired from Serb positions, killing 43 and seriously wounding 84 civilians near the Markale City Market in Sarajevo, writes the Patria News Agency.

The mortar shell was produced in the "Krušik" factory in Valjevo in 1993. Four other shells that exploded near Markale that day had the same marking. 

Followers of the criminal Radovan Karadžić still claim today that the Sarajevo government is responsible for the massacre, wanting to secure international military intervention.

The massacre near the City Market was the last major crime of Karadžić's Serbs in besieged Sarajevo. It was followed by NATO's operation "Deliberate Force". The military-political leadership of the Serbs was then forced to lift the siege of Sarajevo and withdraw artillery from positions around the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Air strikes were extended beyond the Sarajevo battlefield zone, so NATO destroyed significant military potential of the Republika Srpska. In northwestern Bosnia, military operations of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Croatian Defence Council followed, which, combined with international pressure, led to the Dayton Agreement.

Laying of flowers at 11 AM

On Friday, August 28, at 11 AM, a delegation from the Canton of Sarajevo will lay flowers at the site of the massacre at Mula-Mustafe Bašeskije street, number 64, in memory of the 43 Sarajevans killed. The massacre occurred 20 years ago, when 84 more people were seriously injured.
