The removal of stray dogs from the streets of Sarajevo's Vogošća settlement is underway, writes the BH News Agency Patria (NAP).
Members of the "Lokom" service, accompanied by police, on Monday removed a large number of stray dogs from the streets of Vogošća, primarily those from bus stops and children's playgrounds.
Lokom is a public utility company of Sarajevo's Novi Grad Municipality, intended for the maintenance of sports facilities in this municipality. Within Lokom, a hygiene service for the removal of dangerous stray dogs has also been established. As the Sarajevo Canton still does not have a hygiene service that would solve the problem of stray dogs at the level of the entire KS, Lokom will perform this role until the establishment of such a service.
As Patria unofficially learns, the Sarajevo Canton's hygiene service is expected to start operating by the end of this year. The dogs will be removed to a shelter, after which all dogs for whom no adopter appears within 15 days will be euthanized, Patria learns.
The excessive number of stray dogs has been one of Sarajevo's major problems for several years. In the first seven months of 2014 alone, more than 450 attacks by stray dogs on Sarajevo citizens were reported, writes Patria.
