(Patria) – Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who is currently serving a prison sentence for calling for unauthorized protests, was hospitalized after suffering an allergic reaction on Sunday.
One of the doctors stated that he suspects Navalny was poisoned with an unknown chemical substance.
Navalny (43) was urgently transferred from prison to the hospital on Sunday morning, where he is serving a 30-day sentence for calling for protests due to the exclusion of several opposition candidates from local elections.
The causes of his condition and diagnosis are still unknown.
'We cannot rule out the possibility that toxic damage to the skin by an unknown chemical substance was inflicted by a third party,' said doctor Anastasia Vasilyeva on Facebook, stating that Navalny has a rash and skin lesions.
She requested that samples of Navalny's hair, skin, and bedding be tested for chemical poisons, and also said that she finds it suspicious that she has not been allowed to do so until now.
Navalny, a prominent opposition figure in Russia, has served several prison sentences in recent years for organizing anti-government demonstrations.
Last year's ruling by the European Court of Human Rights stated that Navalny's arrests and detentions in 2012 and 2014 were politically motivated and considered human rights violations.
Moscow called the ruling controversial, writes Euronews.
