Lavić: Political actors have started the campaign very cautiously, saving their strength and main trump cards for the beginning of October

(Patria) - Prof. Dr. Senadin Lavić from the Faculty of Political Science in Sarajevo was a guest on Hayat Television last night, where he spoke about the upcoming Local Elections, as well as other topics.

Democracy is, in fact, a set of rules and procedures that must be respected, especially during elections, Lavić said.

- What I could notice from the very beginning is that political actors have started the campaign very cautiously, without too many big promises or bombastic headlines, perhaps trying to save their strength for the final days of the campaign, around October 1st to 4th, when they might 'unleash' their main pre-election trump cards.

Of course, when you analyze the last election cycles, it is noticeable that there are fewer and fewer promises, and it is becoming questionable how you can attract citizens at all. This is supported by the turnout of 50%, which also speaks volumes about what citizens think about this process - Lavić points out.

The conclusion, the professor adds, is that citizens ultimately get the government they deserve, even though people complain afterwards.

- The answer to that is: why didn't we all turn out, instead of treating everything as some kind of coincidence - Professor Lavić is critical of citizens' attitudes towards local and general elections.

And then he once again reminded them of their exceptional role on election day itself.

- Citizens here have an immeasurably great and extremely important role because they now have the opportunity to dictate to political parties what should be done.

To demand it, to bring them to a position where political parties serve the citizens, which they are not doing currently, and we currently have no coordination between political ideas, stances, and citizens.

Without intending to offend anyone with this, it seems we are in some underdeveloped state of political consciousness - Lavić states.

He notes that the key politics is precisely local, that it is the reality of the life we live - electricity, water, lighting, kindergartens, schools, and that he hopes the importance of these issues will, nevertheless, lead to a higher turnout this year.

- Projects at the municipal level must be continuous and visible, not just that machines are turned on a month before the elections and it's like - here we have built you a street or lighting.

Therefore, municipal politics cannot be conducted only for one term; we must plan projects for the next 20 years and ensure they are not changed with every new election.

The understanding of local politics must change, that it is not some incidental politics. On the contrary, I think it is the most important politics because it directly concerns the lives of each of us - Lavić says.
