Krišto complained to high-ranking EU officials about Schmidt imposing amendments to the Election Law

(Patria) - BiH Council of Ministers Chairperson Borjana Krišto sent a letter today to high-ranking EU officials regarding the Election Law, in the context of BiH's European path.

Krišto wrote to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Council Charles Michel, President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, and European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi.

She recalled the recent opening of negotiations and stated that it is clear to everyone in BiH that comprehensive electoral reform is of particular importance to BiH.

Krišto also emphasized that Bosnia and Herzegovina, as a future EU member state, needs an Election Law that will not be the product of imposition or outvoting.

In line with this, she recalled that special attention is being paid to harmonizing amendments to the Election Law.

The competent Ministry of Justice sent the draft Law for procedure on March 21, 2024, which is currently undergoing public debate, to which everyone in BiH can currently provide their comments and amendments.

She stated that the imposition of extensive international supervision with as many as 114 amendments is incompatible with BiH's European future, and is most detrimental to an independent and sovereign Bosnia and Herzegovina, considering that it concerns a Law upon which the democratic system rests and which, after the BiH Constitution, is the most important legal act.

"I firmly believe that the imposition of a decision on amendments to the BiH Election Law represents, for me, as the Chairperson of the BiH Council of Ministers, an unexpected challenge that we will have to address, together with you, in a way that does not jeopardize our EU path, nor the work of BiH institutions, because it is precisely the institutions in BiH that must take responsibility for making all decisions," Krišto said in her letter to high-ranking EU officials.

In the end, she emphasized the need to continue cooperation and joint work, strengthen trust and respect among us in BiH, and support solutions that will be the result of the work of BiH institutions.

She expressed her conviction that only in this way is it possible to make the necessary progress for all of us in BiH, including our European path.
