Kovačević: May 2 is a day of remembrance for the defence of Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina

(Patria) - That May 2, 1992, remains permanently etched in the memory of many Sarajevans and all citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina. On that day, special units of the then Yugoslav Army attempted to seize the building of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, while fighting took place just 150 metres away, in Skenderija. It was on May 2 that the siege of Sarajevo began, lasting 1,460 days.

For the first time since the Second World War, after 47 years, on that May 2, 1992, an air raid warning was sounded in Sarajevo. From that day on, the city was under siege, without food, electricity or water. Communications were cut off, and Sarajevo was shelled daily.

The second of May remains one of the most important dates in the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina and its capital, a day considered the moment of the defence of Sarajevo and the salvation of the state.

This date remains a permanent reminder of the determination and courage in the defence of the capital and the state, and on the occasion of May 2, Slaven Kovačević sent a symbolic greeting.

In his message, he stated:

“Every May 2, my memories go back to that heroic time, with feelings of great pride. That is why I congratulate you on this day when Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina were defended,” Kovačević wrote on social media.
