(Patria) – The coronavirus pandemic is raging across the world, and it appears to be spreading fastest at the moment in the populous United States of America, where more than 250,000 have been infected and more than 6,000 people have died.
More than one million people have been infected worldwide, and more than 51,500 people of all ages have now lost their battle for life. 200,576 people have fully recovered.
US President Donald Trump has ordered defense forces to begin manufacturing ventilators. He blamed US state authorities for the shortage of medical equipment and supplies, stating that stockpiles should have been created.
It is estimated that New York, as the epicenter of the crisis in the US, will run out of ventilators in just a few days.
The US government is preparing to introduce guidelines on mandatory mask-wearing.
Italy remains the hardest-hit country with nearly 14,000 deaths, followed by Spain with just over 10,000.
The infection is also spreading rapidly in the Middle East, where in just one week the total number of infected surpassed 60,000, most of them in Iran, which is at the top of the list with 50,500 infected and 3,160 dead. Israel is the second hardest-hit country in the Middle East with 6,857 cases and 36 deaths. It is followed by Saudi Arabia with 1,885 infected and 21 deceased.
The British health service is opening the first field hospital in London, as well as four more temporary facilities for treating patients with coronavirus.
Australia's Chief Medical Officer Brendan Murphy estimates that the pandemic's final toll could reach around 10 million cases.
