CONFERENCE IN MC SREBRENICA "(Non)Prosecution of Genocide Deniers: Presentation of the 2024 Genocide Denial Report"

(Patria) - The Srebrenica Memorial Center, on the occasion of the anniversary of the official operation of this institution, is preparing a conference titled: "(Non)Prosecution of Genocide Deniers: Presentation of the 2024 Genocide Denial Report."

The conference will focus on reports on the denial of genocide in Srebrenica, with a special emphasis on the latest "Report on the Denial of Genocide in Srebrenica 2024." The conference will bring together experts, journalists, lawyers, and activists who deal with confronting the past, analyzing media narratives, and the impact of political discourse on the public perception of genocide.

The main topics to be covered include:

1. Overview of the 2024 Report – Quantitative analysis and comparison of genocide denial cases in the last three years, with an emphasis on the decrease in the number of cases and the continued obstruction in judicial prosecution.
2. Legal Obstacles – Discussion on the non-prosecution of dozens of reports according to the Law on Prohibition of Genocide Denial and Glorification of War Criminals, despite legislative changes in 2021.
3. Media Narratives and Propaganda – The role of media in spreading narratives that deny genocide, analysis of key actors, including political figures and media outlets from Serbia and Republika Srpska.
4. New Trends in Genocide Denial
5. Recommendations for Future Actions – Consideration of recommendations from the 2024 Report, with the aim of improving mechanisms for combating genocide denial, including legislative reforms, education, and raising public awareness.

Panel 1: "Genocide Denial Reports: Methodology, Analysis, and Recommendations"

The panel will bring together editors and authors of all Reports. The focus will be on analyzing the results of monitoring media articles, quantitative and qualitative data collection approaches, and key findings and recommendations. The panel will also explore changes in genocide denial trends compared to previous reports.

Panel 2: "Legal Framework and Challenges in the (Non)Prosecution of Genocide Deniers"

The panel will bring together legal experts who will discuss the (non)prosecution of genocide deniers. The focus will be on legal mechanisms in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with an emphasis on the Law on Prohibition of Genocide Denial adopted in 2021 and the challenges in its implementation. Reasons for rejecting reports and possible reforms to ensure more effective application of the law will be discussed.
