(Patria) - On United Nations Day, 24 October 2025, the 'Srebrenica Flower' monument, a symbol of remembrance, truth and a warning to humanity, was solemnly unveiled at the United Nations Square in Vienna.
The monument, dedicated to the innocent victims of the genocide in Srebrenica, was placed in front of the United Nations building – at a location and on a day of powerful symbolism. It was on 24 October 1991 that the political process began which, according to international verdicts, led to systematic violence and crimes against the civilian population in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The event was organised by the Association of Bosnian-Herzegovinian Organisations in Austria – Consilium Bosniacum, with the support of the City of Vienna, institutions from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Austria, and numerous members of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian diaspora community.
The ceremony was also attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Elmedin Konaković, and the Minister for Human Rights and Refugees of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sevlid Hurtić.
Addressing those present, Minister Konaković emphasised that the 'Srebrenica Flower' has a multi-layered meaning – as a permanent reminder of the innocence of the victims, a symbol of hope and a warning to humanity. He stressed that the culture of remembrance must be present throughout the year, all over the world, because only truth leads to the healing of society.
Minister Hurtić stated that 'Srebrenica is not only a wound of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but a wound of all humanity.' 'Today, when the 'Srebrenica Flower' stands in front of the United Nations in the heart of Europe, we send a message that truth does not grow old, that remembrance does not fade, and that humanity is defended through memory. Each petal of the 'Srebrenica Flower' reminds us of the lost lives, but also of the strength of the mothers who built a symbol of hope from pain,' said Hurtić, adding that with this act, Vienna becomes a guardian of truth and a friend of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
During the gathering, the need to continue the process of justice, to find the remaining victims and to support institutions that preserve memory, such as the Srebrenica Memorial Center – Potočari, was emphasised.
The 'Srebrenica Flower' monument, whose white colour symbolises innocence and green hope, now stands as a permanent reminder of the victims of genocide and a call to the world to build a society founded on truth, justice and dignity.
