(Patria) - The funeral prayer (dženaza-namaz) for Mufti Šefki-ef. Omerbašić, the first president of the Meshihat of the Islamic Community in Croatia, was performed today at Zagreb's Mirogoj cemetery.
The funeral prayer, led by the Mufti of Zagreb, academician Aziz-ef. Hasanović, was attended by the presidents of the Meshihat in Serbia and Slovenia, muftis, members of the Rijaset, imams, as well as officials from the political, social, religious and cultural life of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and delegations from Iran and the Republic of Turkey.
- Parting with people always brings sadness and nostalgia. Farewells are difficult and stir emotions. Many of us knew the late Mufti Omerbašić, listened to his words and learned from him. We know him as a good man, diligent in everything he did - said on this occasion the Reis-ul-Ulema of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Husein-ef. Kavazović.
He recalled the Quranic calls to do good, which results in a reward in both worlds. The late Mufti acted with an awareness of these values.
- Today we are seeing off a man whom we will remember for the good he did, his work and engagement - emphasised the Reis-ul-Ulema.
During his address, Mufti Hasanović recalled the contribution that Mufti Omerbašić made to the development of the Islamic Community in Croatia and Slovenia, its infrastructure and the opening of congregations (džemat), as well as the organisation of the Community's work and activities.
- The examples of God's Mercy are countless, and one of the examples of Mercy is the passing to the Hereafter. Today we are temporarily parting from Mufti Omerbašić, who was, likewise, an indicator of God's Mercy to us in these regions - said Mufti Hasanović.
He also highlighted the contribution he made to the construction of the Zagreb Mosque, as well as his merits for its construction and opening.
- There was no retreat for him. Only the Lord knew, and his closest associates witnessed, how much burden was on his shoulders - stated Mufti Hasanović.
He emphasised that this is a day of sadness, but also of pride because "we are seeing off an alim and a scholar who loved science."
- The Mufti leaves behind an organised Community in Croatia that is recognised in this society, scholarly works, and children he raised to live universal values. In a word, he left the common good - concluded Mufti Hasanović.
After the funeral prayer, Mufti Omerbašić was buried in the Alley of the Greats (Aleja velikana) at Mirogoj.
