KCUS issues statement on patient suicide: Investigation underway to determine all circumstances

(Patria) - The University Clinical Center of Sarajevo issued a press release today expressing "deep regret over the tragic event that occurred last night in our institution when, despite the application of all prescribed procedures and safety measures, a tragic suicide occurred that deeply shocked the entire staff of KCUS, as well as other patients".

As stated, the patient was hospitalized for diagnosis and therapy, and during her stay, she was under the standard supervision of medical staff.

"KCUS is fully cooperating with the investigative bodies to determine all circumstances of this event. The competent criminal police department conducted an on-site investigation during the night. In parallel with the official investigations, the General Director of KCUS, prim. doc. dr. Alen Pilav, formed a Commission for the Implementation of an Extraordinary Supervision regarding this event, which is obliged to submit its report to the General Director within 72 hours", the Clinical Center announced.

They note that similar incidents have occurred before, and at that time, all prescribed measures were also applied, with no identified omissions in safety and other protocols.

"Isolated cases of suicide in hospitals are a challenge faced by healthcare institutions worldwide, despite the application of the highest standards of care and safety. KCUS remains committed to continuously improving its procedures to further reduce risks and ensure maximum protection for all patients", the statement reads.

KCUS expressed its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased patient and emphasized that they are available for all necessary support and assistance during these difficult times.

"We ask the media and the public for understanding and restraint in reporting, in order to preserve the dignity of the deceased and protect the privacy of her family", KCUS appealed.
