In the Canton of Sarajevo in 2010 and 2014, mandatory preventive systematic deratization was carried out in both phases, spring and autumn, while in the years in between, intervention deratization or one of its phases was carried out, the Ministry of Health of KS announced, reports the Patria news agency.
- Public procurement procedures and the slowness of responses to filed complaints often hinder and impede the dynamics required for regular and complete deratization. This can ultimately pose a risk to the health of the population, necessitating the search for a more adequate legal framework for implementing these procedures.
In 2015, all necessary actions were taken for the spring deratization to be carried out on time, so the Expert Service for Common Affairs of the Canton of Sarajevo initiated the procedure for selecting the most favorable bidder on 11/13/2014 and repeated the procedure on 06/22/2015 in accordance with the Law on Public Procurement of BiH.
Both times, the procedure was annulled and returned for a new procedure by the Office for Review of Complaints. The Expert Service for Common Affairs of the Canton of Sarajevo initiated the procedure for selecting the most favorable bidder for intervention and other operational-autumn deratization services, and it was published on the Public Procurement Agency portal on 07/29/2015, and the procedure is ongoing.
According to its definition, deratization is a set of different measures carried out with the aim of controlling harmful rodents that are reservoirs and carriers of infectious disease agents, and mandatory systematic deratization represents one of the preventive measures in accordance with the Law on the Protection of the Population from Infectious Diseases.
In addition to deratization, it is necessary to implement other measures for the successful reduction of disease agents and pests in a given area, and we particularly emphasize the following measures:
- proper disposal of solid waste, which includes the remediation (elimination) of illegal dumpsites,
- proper disposal of fecal waste,
- hygienic and sanitary measures in public areas, on business premises, yards, and
warehouses,
- regular maintenance of agricultural areas, as well as other measures.
The costs of deratization related to public areas and public goods are financed from the budget of the Canton of Sarajevo, while all owners, users, or managers of facilities or spaces pay the costs of deratization directly to the deratization contractor or the pest control contractor they choose themselves.
It is important to emphasize that according to the Report of the Institute of Public Health of the Canton of Sarajevo, the hygienic-epidemiological situation in the Canton of Sarajevo as of 08/28/2015 is satisfactory, according to the Ministry's statement.
