Canadian province of Nova Scotia joins commemoration of the 29th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide

(Patria) - The Institute for Genocide Research Canada received a letter from the Office of the Premier of the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, Tim Houston. The letter states, among other things:

"The war in Bosnia and Herzegovina left many without a safe haven. Nova Scotia was among those Canadian provinces that welcomed refugees during this difficult period in the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina. I am aware that the hard work of the Institute for Genocide Research Canada resulted in the Canadian Parliament unanimously passing a historic resolution in 2015 to recognize April as Genocide Remembrance, Condemnation, and Prevention Month. In addition, in 2010, the Canadian Parliament unanimously adopted a resolution sponsored by Member of Parliament Brian Masse establishing Srebrenica Genocide Remembrance Day in Canada.

We admire the continued dedication of the Institute for Genocide Research Canada in raising awareness of the Srebrenica genocide in Canada. Nova Scotia respects that the Canadian Parliament is the most important body for commemorating the Srebrenica genocide on behalf of all Canadians. Therefore, Nova Scotia joins in commemorating the 29th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide in Canada. It will be our honor to mark and commemorate this day with you and with all Canadians”.

The Director of the Institute for Genocide Research Canada, Emir Ramić, thanked the Premier of Nova Scotia, Tim Houston, and wrote:

It is our collective responsibility to remember the Srebrenica genocide and take action to prevent present and future crimes. It is very significant that you are joining Canada's unique and important culture of remembering the Srebrenica genocide to honor victims and survivors, reflect on the past, and promote awareness for a better future. By commemorating together, we strengthen our resolve to educate and advocate for a future free from hatred and violence".
