CANADA In Windsor, the central commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide was held

(Patria) - Organized by the "Srebrenica Windsor 25" Organizing Committee, which brings together numerous organizations and communities from all over Canada, the central Canadian commemoration on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide was held. The commemoration was held in front of the monument to the victims of the genocide in Windsor, where this event is held continuously.

The program began with a peaceful march of participants through the streets of Windsor, followed by the recitation of the Quran led by Haris ef. Zulović. Mensud Dević, representative of the organizing committee, addressed the attendees with introductory remarks, thanking the guests, sponsors, and volunteers.

A special emotional tone was given to the event by the performance of the children's choir from Toronto, which performed the composition "Srebrenica Inferno". For the first time, the commemoration was attended by a representative of the Embassy of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Canada – advisor Daniela Čolić, who addressed the attendees. Ambassador of BiH to the USA, Dr. Sven Alkalaj, then addressed the attendees.

One of the most memorable speeches was given by former Canadian Parliament member Brian Masse, who sponsored the adopted resolutions on the Srebrenica genocide. The Mayor of Windsor, Andrew Dilkens, also addressed the attendees, as did the Reisu-l-ulema of the Islamic Community of BiH, Husein ef. Kavazović, and Mufti Sabahudin ef. Ćeman from North America, via video link.

Wreaths were laid at the monument to the victims of the genocide by representatives of the BiH Embassy in Ottawa and the Institute for the Research of Genocide Canada. Special acknowledgments for contributing to the culture of remembrance were awarded to Brian Masse, Daniela Čolić, Mayor Dilkens, Emir Ramić and the family of the late Senad Aličehajić, as well as numerous Canadian officials who issued proclamations declaring July 11th as the Day of Remembrance of the Genocide.

Among the speakers were genocide survivor Amela Selimović, Anida Šabanović from the BiH community of Detroit, Dr. Emir Ramić from the Institute for the Research of Genocide, BiH Ambassador to the UN Dr. Zlatko Lagumdžija, youth representative Emina Kapo, and Arti Tmburi on behalf of the Albanian community of Windsor.

Hundreds of people attended the commemoration – members of the BiH diaspora, as well as numerous Canadians, and representatives of various communities.

The holding of this commemoration, which gathers more and more participants and guests each year, represents a strong contribution to preserving the truth about the Srebrenica genocide, the fight for justice for the victims, and strengthening the culture of remembrance in Canada and the world.

Srebrenica remains a moral warning to contemporary civilization. Canada, with its legislative and social engagement, is at the forefront of institutionalizing remembrance and fighting against genocide denial.
